Talsi Regional Municipality

According to Law of Republic of Latvia on Administrative Territories and Populated Areas there are 9 cities and 110 municipalities.

In the territory of the former Talsi District there are four municipalities, since July 1st 2009 – Talsi Municipality, Roja Municipality, Dundaga Municipality and Mērsrags Municipality. 

There are four towns in Talsi Municipality - Sabile, Stende, Talsi and Valdemārpils and 14 Rural Territories – Abava, Ārlava, Balgale, Ģibuļi, Īve, Ķūļciems, Laidze, Lauciene, Lībagi, Lube, Strazde, Valdgale ,Vandzene and Virbi.

Density – 19.3 per km²

Area of Talsi Municipality - 1763.2 ²

 

Territory

• County’s main road Ventspils – Rīga (A 10) and railroad Ventspils – Rīga crosses Talsi Municipality.

Largest part of region consists of highlands of Northern Courland. Small part of region is taken up by Costal lowlands in the northeast.

–High point - Kamparkalns (174 m)

 

Landscape diversity is an opportunity and at the same time limitation to entrepreneurship, as well as a resource of tourism development.

Short description about Talsi county

The hilly terrain of Talsi County with its own characteristics determines landscape diversity, and it is best expressed in the open, foreseeable rural landscapes. This is one of the most diverse areas of the North Kurzeme, expressed with hilly terrains and a number of small, but deep lakes. 52% of all the territory is covered by forests.

Talsi County has a nature park „Talsi Hillock Nature Park” and European Grove; travelers can walk through the Sound path at the vicarage of Talsi, to go on the highest top of North Kurzeme – the hill Kamparkalns, where the tower in height of 28 meters lays, to dream at the banks of the lakes Sirdsezers (the Heart Lake) and Sapņezers (the Dream Lake) embosomed by water lilies, as well as enjoy peace and calm around Jāņkalni farm in order to listen to myths and stories about old times.

Talsi is one of the most picturesque Latvian towns. Nine hills and two lakes establish landscape, characteristic to Talsi. The most beautiful picture of Talsi can be seen in florescence time of cherries, apple-trees, and lilacs. 

Talsi County is rich with interesting museums. Talsi has the onlyLatvian Agricultural Museum in Latvia. Everybody can visit collection of fire fighting materials in Vandzene. In Vaide – horns, collected in Slītere forests. In Pedvāle Open-air art museum, which is located in Sabile, everyone can look at art objects and installations, created in open-air, including stone sculptures, the author if which is Ojārs Feldbergs. Pedvāle Open-air art museum is a national cultural monument and is included in a protected area „Abava Valley”, which also covers the manors of Firkspedvāle and Briņķpedvāle. The territory of Ķūļciems parish covers a part of nature park Engure Lake”. Very popular place is „Laumas” Nature Park with its specialized trails for acquisition of different nature processes – Bee trail, Bird trail, Sports trail, and Forest pathway. The nature park also offers a variety of recreation – mini golf, fishing, as well as candle creation and bee products. But the Daylily garden, located in Lauciene parish, in July and August offers the greatest collection of daylilies in Eastern Europe.
