Telavi (Georgian: თელავი) is the main city and administrative center of Georgia's eastern province of Kakheti. Its population consists of some 21,800 inhabitants.The city is located on foot-hills of Tsiv-Gombori Range at 500–800 meters above the sea level.
Georgia is one of the oldest wine producing regions of the world. The fertile valleys of the South Caucasus, which Georgia straddles, are believed by manyarchaeologists to be the source of the world's first cultivated grapevines and neolithic wine production, over 8,000 years ago.Due to the many millennia of wine in Georgian history, the traditions of its viticulture are entwined and inseparable with the country's national identity. Kakheti is the homeland of wine producing industry of Georgia.
The cooperation between Telavia and Talsi Municipalities started in 2014. This cooperation include such areas as culture, education, sports, ecomomic, tourism.
Talsu municipality delegation from 29 September to 1 October was in Georgia in Telavi municipality to become familiar with potential partners and signed a letter of intent for possible cooperation. The idea of friendship with Telavi local government Kakheti region occurred in the spring, when there was an opportunity to participate in the EU-funded project, where one of the topics was "Support for democratic and civil society development." Contact with the Telavi local government founded the Valdemārpils city and Arlavas district administrative head of Andris Grīnbergs.
Telavi municipality was formed only in this year in August 4, after the local elections in Georgia. Until then, it was the Kakheti Telavi Civic Center, which also included the surrounding parishes. The delegation from Georgia could not attend the Lejre days in Talsi, because to create a new local government structure was a huge job.
Young friends were eager to establish cooperation with citizens in Talsi, and looked forward to a delegation from the Latvia. Member of the delegation was included in the Talsi District Council 1.Vice-President Normunds Tropiņš the signing of a letter of intent on initiating cooperation. Telavi municipality went to the Talsi Regional Municipality Executive Chief Aldis Vilsons, Head of Public Relations, International Relations Coordinator Inga Priede and Valdemārpils city and Ārlavas Parish Department manager Andris Grīnbergs.
Visit to Georgia three days passed very filled, because new friends tried to show as much as possible. First evening of the day four-hour-long conversation turned to Telavi municipality mayor Plato Kalmakhelidzi. Already in the first minutes of the meeting showed three common things that set one Talsu and Telavi municipality. Namely, the two cities beginning with a single letter "T", both located in the hills - Talsi nine, Telavi - seven. Both municipal leaders are doctors by profession.
The most important aim of the visit was the signing a letter of intent in which one of the points provided to build and strengthen cooperation in culture, education and sports, as well as to develop economic relations. During a meeting with industry leaders agreed that pay to attention children and youth delegations cultural exchanges to explore the traditions of both nations. Children are the future of Europe, but in Latvia EU Member State that can assist Georgia towards the EU and attracting investment.
