Talsi County Municipality Invites Applications for the International

 Carl Ferdinand Amenda Music School Competition for

Individual Performers and Ensembles of Stringed Instruments


Continuing the tradition of the Carl Ferdinand Amenda Music Festival, Talsi County Municipality hosts the third International Carl Ferdinand Amenda Music School Competition for Individual Performers and Ensembles of Stringed Instruments.

Applications for the competition are welcome from individual performers and members of ensembles of stringed instruments aged 7 to 17 years. The competition will take place on 9 April 2016 at 10.00 in Talsi Music School.

The aim of the International C.F. Amenda Music School Competition for Individual Performers and Ensembles of Stringed Instruments is as follows:

  • To promote the values of classical music continuing the tradition of the Carl Ferdinand Amenda Music Festival in Talsi;
  • To improve individual instrument skills and collective music experience among students from stringed instrument departments of music schools, as well as to broaden creative and artistic experience of students;
  • To discover new talented performers;
  • To establish new creative contacts and enhance experience exchange.

The competition will take place in two categories: individual performers (category A) and ensembles (category B).

The competition for individual performers will take place in three age groups with specific time limit for rendition of programme for each group:

Group I – from 7 to 9 years (included), a programme up to 6 minutes;

Group II – from 10 to 12 years (included), a programme from 5 to 10 minutes;

Group II – from 13 to 17 years (included), a programme from 5 to 12 minutes.

The competition for ensembles will take place in two groups with 10 minutes as the total time limit for programme:

Group I – homogenous string ensembles;

Group II – chamber ensembles and ensembles which include some stringed instrument (violin, cello).

Participants of the competition should play compositions of different character, out of which one should be a piece by composers of the Viennese Classic or its arrangement. Homogenous ensembles and individual performers must play the competition programme by heart. Two sets of music of the competition programme must be submitted on the day of registration for the competition.

The competition jury assesses performance of each participant on a 25-point scale according to the following criteria: performance technique, artistic performance, overall impression.

Talsi County Municipality will award the prize money amounting to EUR 400.00 after tax to the best performer in the competition. Please note that identity document must be presented in order to receive the prize money.

Application form must be sent electronically to by 10 March 2016.

Participation fee must be paid by 21 March 2016 in the following amount: EUR 30.00 per each participant for participants in category A, EUR 60.00 per ensemble in category B. A discount of 50 % is applied to participation fee for participants from Talsi County. Invoice will be sent electronically after receipt of the application form, but original invoice will be given on the registration day.

Order of performance, rehearsal time and plan for the competition day will be sent electronically by 29 March 2016.
